Thursday 23rd February marked the opening of Urdang International Dance Competition (UIDC) inaugural heat in the United Arab Emirates, held at the wonderful Hartland International School, Dubai. The competition ran over three days with a high level of talent demonstrated from competitors as young as five right up to nineteen years of age.  Entries were in a variety of dance styles, ranging from classical ballet and jazz to hip hop and bollywood.  The UIDC was a first of its kind for the UAE, many of the dancers had never taken part in a competition before. Participants were really excited to have the chance to dance for a place in the grand final at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, and represent their country.

Judges Solange Urdang, CEO of Urdang, Claudimar Neto, professional choreographer, teacher and major artist performer, and Niall Swords, professional performer, teacher and choreographer, all commented on the high standard of dance, level of commitment and pure determination that was shown. Although there was a sense of competition, there was also a good feeling of support, camaraderie and respect between all the competitors. There was wonderful feel-good vibe and all the participants thoroughly enjoyed taking part.

The highest score of the competition came from a senior slow team entry from Diverse Performing Arts called ‘Battle for the Crown’ winning first in their category abd scoring a very impressive 96 points out of a possible 100. We look forward to seeing them compete at the grand final in London, along with other finalists, Step Up Academy and Harmony Ballet Center. All the finalists are excited to have the chance to take to the stage at West End theatre in London and compete in the International Grand Final against other dancers from all over the globe.

Urdang International would like to thank Hartland International School Dubai for hosting us in their fabulous 600 seat auditorium. The organisers of the competition were thrilled at the turnout over the entire weekend, the whole team were touched by how welcoming everyone was for the very first UAE heat. After such a successful weekend in Dubai, everyone at Urdang International is extremely excited to come back and see more of the talent that Dubai has to offer. Please keep an eye on the website and social media platforms for more news coming soon! We would once again like to thank our hosts at Hartland but we would most of all like to thank the dancers, parents and teachers who helped make it all happen, so thank you and see you all soon!
